Did Not Our Hearts Burn?

Luke 24:13–35 · Rochester Christian Church · November 1, 2026

On the road to Emmaus, two disciples walked seven miles with Jesus and didn’t know it. What they remembered afterward was this: their hearts burned while He opened the Scriptures. Information does not equal inspiration. God still speaks through His Word — here’s how to start.

This week’s challenge

Read Hebrews 10:19–25. Read it more than once. Ask three questions:

  1. What does it say about God?
  2. What does it say about me?
  3. What do I need to do about it?

Then bring your Bible next Sunday. Bring your questions.

Go back to the road

Read the whole story for yourself: Luke 24:13–35 (ESV)

Verses from Sunday’s message

  • John 10:10 — Jesus came to give life, and give it abundantly. Read
  • Hebrews 4:12 — The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword. Read
  • Romans 15:4 — Through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Read
  • Isaiah 55:11 — God’s Word accomplishes what He purposes. Read

Four ways to get started

  1. Ten minutes a day. Pick a time you already have — coffee, lunch, before bed — and keep the same spot in the house. Start with Hebrews 10:19–25 this week.
  2. Read a whole book. Start with John. One chapter a day and you’ll finish in three weeks. Begin at John 1
  3. Pick up a devotional on your way out of church.
  4. Don’t read alone. Join the Sunday morning Bible study class I teach at Rochester Christian Church, 9:00 a.m. Bring your questions.

Real change does not happen apart from the Word of God and the People of God.

I'm Cecil Renshaw. By day I'm a Microsoft Certified Trainer and the owner of SharePoint Business Solutions, Inc., where I help government and corporate teams get real work done with Microsoft 365. This site is the rest of the story: what I believe, what I'm building in the woodshop, and what's on the smoker this weekend.

The faith posts are the heart of it. Everything else — the cutting boards, the brisket, the coffee, the '55 Chevy — is just where that faith shows up on an ordinary Tuesday.

Look around, and if something here helps you, I'd like to hear about it.
